Road to Iran-Turkey border
Road from Tabriz to Iran-Turkey border

We had left Tabriz and were heading for the Iran-Turkey border at Bazargan. We were unsure what this arch signified. Presumably it marked a boundary between administrative areas, or had a commemorative function.

This stretch of road was good, but as we approached the border it degenerated into a long section hardly more than one car wide. This had been recently resurfaced and there seemed to be far too much tar and far too little gravel. But there was no other way, and we drove on, the sun beating down and our car speeding through molten tar. The car was spattered, even the windscreen, and it was never possible to remove all the traces afterwards.
