Map of route from Tabriz to Bazargan

We followed the road from Tabriz heading north-west. Note the stretch of un-metalled road near the border. The Iran-Turkey relationship had never been good since the days of the Ottoman Empire, and it was only the recent introduction of fast international lorries that had begun to make the border road a significant trading route.

At one point we were forced to detour because of roadworks. This was probably through Khoy.

Erzurum is shown on the next route map.
