Road through the mountains in Lorestan
North of Ahvaz the road passed through flat desert country, but after about 200 km the terrain became mountainous.
But it was still hot and barren.
We were now in the province of Lorestan, travelling through the western slopes of the Zagros mountains.
The landscape of Lorestan is extremely mountainous, with many mountain ranges running northwest to southeast.
Together they form the Zagros chain, an arc of mountain ranges extending for about 1500 kilometres
from the Kurdistan (Kordestan) region on the border with Iraq to the Straits of Hormuz.
The highest mountain peak, Mt Dena, reaches 4550 metres.
The province of Lorestan is one of the oldest regions of Iran, the name Lorestan meaning Land of the Lurs.
The major city is Khorramabad.
