Outskirts of Basra

There was an immediate sense of freedom in leaving Kuwait and entering Iraq. In Kuwait we had been subject to all the restrictions of Islamic Law, but Iraq was secular. When we reached the outskirts of Basra we stopped at a small roadside shop and bought our first beer.

After a year in Kuwait with only home-brewed beer available, this beer rated as the best we had ever tasted. Unfortunately when we reached Iran we were back into another non-alcohol zone.
