GLS / 1981 / Cuillin Ridge / Skye

Peter Clarkson in Coir' a' Ghrunnda where we were to climb up on to the Cuillin Ridge.

Scottish coires can be intimidating, especially in Skye. Even if civilization is only a couple of hours walk away the mountains of Scotland have a feeling of remoteness. It was June and yet in Coir' a' Ghrunnda there was no vegetation and no sign of life anywhere. If we had been climbing in the Alps, at this height (less than 500 metres) there would have been wild flowers and we might have seen Ibexes or Marmots, but nothing lived in Coir' a' Ghrunnda.
