Sunrise on Gran Paradiso The route had followed the increasingly-steep slope of the ski route, and had then traversed right to the rocky pinnacles at the edge of the West face of Gran Paradiso. The West face was now in the sun. but it didn't reach my side of the mountain until near the top.

A good thing, because ascending the snow-covered slopes of the route up Gran Paradiso would have been hard going if the snow had begun to soften.
