Crossing the bergschrund of Gran Paradiso

The three climbers in the lower right of the photograph (partly in shadow) have just crossed the small bergschrund between Gran Paradiso and its glacier, and are now following the well-trodden path to the summit. The bergschrund is visible beneath the central rocky outcrop, but has been filled in where it is crossed by the route by the passage of countless boots. There is a better view of the route across the bergschrund in the photograph taken when starting the descent.

The couple on the left appear to be consulting a guidebook, which is rather odd because they are on a well-beaten track and there are only two choices that can be made - up or down.

Note the skiers making their descent. It isn't until they get lower down that skiers can safely leave the track.
