Avalanche near Roccia Viva, Valnontey
Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso, Italy
This avalanche occurred as we were walking up towards the head of the Valnontey valley.
Part of the hanging glacier that descends from Colle di Money (on the extreme left) had broken away.
We were a considerable distance away when we heard it - this photo was taken with a 135 mm telescopic lens.
The peak on the left of the picture is Becco della Pazienza (3603 m),
in the centre is Roccia Viva (3650 m),
and on the right Becca di Gay (3621 m).
Just visible on the extreme right is the pass of Colle Gran Croux (3437 m).
