Sampans at Aberdeen

The harbour at Aberdeen was full of sampans and junks in the 1950s. For more about Aberdeen see the photograph 'Floating World'.

The word sampan (sometimes spelled sampaan) means 'three boards' and refers to the traditional method of construction. Sampans and junks are seen at all ports and navigable rivers in South China.
