Restricted Area between Hong Kong and China
During the 1950s there were strict border controls between Hong Kong and China,
and there was a deep restricted area along the border.
At the time, Hong Kong was a bastion of British imperial power in the region,
with a garrison of about 10,000 troops stationed at Hong Kong.
When this photograph was taken the Korean war had not long ended
and British-Chinese relations were coloured by mutual mistrust.
