The 'Floating World'
Sampaans and junks in Aberdeen Harbour
The 'Floating World' is a term long used for the carpet of junks and sampaans in Aberdeen Harbour.
The inhabitants of these sailing craft are mainly Hakkas who make their living fishing or trading between Hong Kong
and Guangzhou (Canton) on the Pearl River.
Aberdeen is also known as Hong Kong village.
The small harbour is sheltered and much more suitable for sampaans and river junks
than the main Hong Kong harbour on the other side of Victoria Island.
Aberdeen Harbour is also famous for its floating restaurants.
