Terracotta Army excavation

The Terracotta Army excavation is in Shanxi Province and can be visited from Xian. The excavation is much more impressive at first hand than the TV images with which everyone is familiar.

Warriors, horses, and chariots were made from terracotta and buried near the tomb of the Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di (Qin dynasty Yellow Emperor). There is much left to be discovered in the area.

A vast structure encloses the Terracotta Army dig, and visitors can see the excavations in progress. Most of the terracotta warriors are left in place which gives an idea of the scale of the burial. There are also display cabinets where terracotta warriors, horses, and chariots, can be seen close up.

On our way to the excavations we visited the burial mound of Qin Shi Huang Di. The Terracotta Army is situated in a flanking position guarding Qin Shi Huang Di's tomb, and it is believed there may be other similar burials in the vicinity.
