Excavations at Banpo Neolithic Village
Banpo is a famous excavation in archaeological circles, consisting of a complete Neolithic village.
As is usual with many Chinese archaeological sites, the Banpo excavation is covered by a roof and is open to the public.
Banpo is in Shanxi Province, the nearest large town being Xian.
Shanxi is rich in historical sites and Banpo is a frequent stop for guided tours of the area.
Banpo is representative of Yangshao culture,
a Neolithic culture which existed along the Yellow River in China from about 5000 BC to 3000 BC.
A reconstruction of a Banpo Neolithic hut can be seen in the photograph.
