Bridge over the Yangtze at Wuhan

(Wuhan and the Yangtze River, Hubei Province, China, 1981)

The Wuhan Yangtze (Yangzi) Bridge was built in 1957 and allowed north and south China to be connected by rail for the first time. The bridge is about 1 mile long and 260 feet high, with road traffic on its upper deck, and rail on its lower.

Since this photograph was taken a second Yangtze bridge has been built further downstream where the Yangtze is even wider.
