Beds on the street at Wuhan

This photograph was taken from our hotel at Wuhan in August. It was the hottest time of the year and the Wuhan nights were sweltering. This group of people had brought their beds down on to the street outside the hotel. This was not an isolated occurrence but was common practice, with whole families sleeping out.

This aspect of Wuhan life would have been invisible to most tourists. Their hotels would be air-conditioned and well away from the residential areas of Wuhan. However our group were travelling as students with the tour organized by the Ministry of Education, and at the price we were paying - air-conditioned accommodation, no way! Mei you banfa!

Whie we were in Wuhan we had to put up with the Wuhan weather just like everybody else. In the heat of my hotel room I rather envied those on the beds below my window.
