The articles in this section cover various aspects of ancient history and religion.

The main focus is on the period from the death of Augustus Caesar to the fall of Jerusalem, including Roman and Syro-Palestinian politics, Graeco-Roman religions and cults, and the emergence of Christianity.

There have been many attempts to write a history of the historical Jesus. None of them have been universally accepted. Usually they are written from a viewpoint within the Christian faith, and this can lead to a picture of Jesus which sits uneasily with secular histories.

Here the life of Jesus is treated only in its historical context. No attempt is made to present a theology of Jesus except where it is necessary to examine his teachings from a political perspective. Aspects considered include the political and religious climate of Jesus' times and the claims of his successors including Paul, Cephas, and James.
