Pet Monkey at Kano (Nigeria, Africa)

This monkey was owned by a neighbour at Kano who had fenced off most of his verandah to create a cage - which gave the animal a far better life than most of the monkeys that ended up as pets.

The monkeys were sold by the local traders who periodically visited the Kano Government Residential Area. They were not really suitable as pets as they were animals that had been captured in the wild. Perhaps today they might enjoy better protection, but the cynic in me suspects not.
